Quality Seed Production Technology

ICAR Research Complex for NEH region, Umiam organized a Field day cum demonstration programme on Quality Seed Production Technology on 04th March, 2021 at Upland Field, Plant Breeding, ICAR-RC-NEH Region, Umiam. The objective of the programme was to elucidate on various aspects of quality seed production in farmers field. Around 35 farmers from Kyrdem village participated in the programme, The programme was organised by Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Philanim W. S. and Ms. Nivedita Shettigar. The programme embarked with a welcome address from Dr. Amit Kumar, Scientist, Plant Breeding, Division of Crop Science. He further elucidated on factors influencing seed production and ways to avoid mechanical mixture in the field. Dr. Philanim W.S., Scientist, Plant Breeding, Division of Crop Science explained on maintenance of pure accessions from pollination, isolation distance, bagging, roughing to harvest of the seed crop. Further Ms Nivedita Shettigar, Scientist, Plant Breeding, Division of Crop Science shed a light on post harvest processing viz. cleaning, winnowing and drying of seeds and different test can farmers can follow to test germination, viability and vigour of the seeds. The programme ended with an open interaction between the scientists and farmers. The participants were encouraged to go for quality seed production to increase food production in their farms. The programme was conducted successfully and the farmers shared their interest in inculcating the information received about the quality seed production in their respective farms.
